The Note

Two thousand fans voted for the truth. That's exactly why it stayed hidden.

In a vaulted stone tavern of Olympus, seen from below, Hermes stands on a long table raising his glowing phone like a torch, surrounded by dozens of fans who all wear the same grey winged cap and hold up the same silver phones.

You voted, and STAND won. His mother keeps her Sundays, and the five seconds keep spreading. November third, 8 a.m., Athena's archives: Ares's copy of the clip has twelve million views. The whole live, with everything Maia said, has four thousand.

The truth is up, Hermes, Athena says. Pin it under his lie: a footnote. On TikTok, Footnotes lets approved contributors add context under a video, and other contributors rate it. At 8:20 she writes it: her next words were, that mask is not my son. It only shows, she warns, if people who usually disagree rate it helpful. I never read twice, Hermes laughs. My fans adore me.

By noon, in a tavern under the agora, two thousand of his fans rate it helpful, and the note stays hidden. Here is the trap: TikTok says only footnotes that meet the threshold for helpful are visible, and it ranks them with a bridge-based system designed to find agreement between people who usually have different opinions. His fans never disagree with him.

At 9 p.m., the note appears. Twelve million people see it, and three thousand followers return. Not thanks to his fans: at 8:58, Apollo posted the full live. Watch to the end. His fans did. Nobody buries my little brother but me, Apollo says. Thursday. At eleven, the bill arrives: fifty cows taken, forty-eight returned, two owed.

Now the choice: pay, and Hermes confesses live on Apollo's channel, and the strike is withdrawn. Refuse, and on Thursday at 4:04, his video falls. And at midnight, Aphrodite texts his mother: Lovely note, darling. It links to my live.

The evidence · The story is fiction. These rules are real.
  1. A footnote needs people who disagree

TikTok says only footnotes that meet the threshold for helpful are visible to the community, and that it uses a bridge-based ranking system designed to find agreement between people who usually have different opinions.

  2. Not everyone can write one

To contribute Footnotes in the U.S., users must have had an account for at least 6 months and have no recent Community Guidelines violations. At the U.S. rollout, TikTok said nearly 80,000 users had qualified.

  3. The two cows are in the myth

In the Homeric Hymn to Hermes, the newborn god cuts off fifty of Apollo's cows from the herd, then slaughters two of them.
