The Clip

His mother showed her face for the first time. By noon, five seconds of it had buried him.

In Aphrodite's pink marble live studio, Maia sits on a pink velvet stool under a giant glowing ring light, showing her face to a camera for the first time, while a rose-gold phone records her with a red dot.

Let Aphrodite erase the live and every clip with it, for his mother's Sundays on her channel, or let it stand and live with the five-second clip?

What happened

You voted, and MOM won. You sent his mother live, on a channel that isn't hers. November second, 7 a.m., Mount Cyllene: Maia taps Go live for the first time in her life. Refused. On YouTube, a live from a phone needs at least fifty subscribers, and Maia has zero.

So it happens on Aphrodite's channel. My channel, darling, she says. My live. My rules. At 8:30, in her pink studio, Maia sits under the giant ring light. On the monitor, in the corner, there is a tiny pair of scissors. Relax, Mom, Hermes laughs, hiding backstage. A live can't be cut.

For the first time, Maia shows her face to all of Olympus. My son lies, she says. He always has. But that mask is not my son. Two million watch, Olympus believes her, and three thousand followers come back. But how long does a live really last?

At 9:12, the live is over, and a clip appears: five seconds. My son lies. Nothing after. Ares reposts it, and by noon four thousand followers are gone. Here is the trap: on YouTube, clipping is turned on by default. Any viewer can cut five to sixty seconds, and the clip is public. It only goes away if the original is deleted or set to private.

Delete it, Maia whispers. Please. But the live is Aphrodite's. My live, darling. Its price? You, on my channel, every Sunday. Now the choice: erase it, and every clip dies with the live, but his mother belongs to Aphrodite on Sundays. Let it stand, and her whole truth stays up, and so does the clip. And far below, next to his mask, a second one is drying. It has his mother's face.

The evidence · The story is fiction. These rules are real.
  1. A phone live needs fifty subscribers

To live stream from a mobile device, YouTube asks for at least 50 subscribers and a verified channel, and you may need to wait 24 hours before your first live stream. For channels with over 50 and under 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the number of viewers.

  2. Clipping is on by default

YouTube says clipping videos is turned on by default. A clip lasts from 5 to 60 seconds, and clips are public: anyone who can watch the original video can watch and share them. Clips of a live stream show up after the live stream has finished and is uploaded as a video.

  3. Only the original takes the clips down

Clips of a video are removed if the original video is deleted or set to private, or if it violates the Community Guidelines. Clips made from unlisted videos remain available.
