The Hours

Eleven stolen hours, one upload. And for the first time, Hermes could get paid.

Hermes at his desk after midnight, grinning as a gold upload bar fills his laptop screen next to a large glowing globe icon.

What happened

You voted, and POST won. At 12:30 a.m., Hermes uploads all eleven hours and four minutes of Apollo's stream, under YouTube's twelve-hour limit, and sets it to public.

By noon, he has four thousand one hundred followers and four thousand watch hours. Enough, he thinks, to finally get paid: a channel can apply to the YouTube Partner Program with a thousand subscribers and four thousand public watch hours in the last twelve months. At 1:58 p.m., he applies.

At 2:14 p.m., Apollo's removal request lands. The video comes down, and the account gets its second copyright strike. Here is the trap: only watch hours from public videos count, and deleted ones don't. His four thousand hours go with the video. And content copied with no real changes can't be monetized anyway.

That evening, Apollo calls: clip for me, and I'll retract both strikes. Work for Apollo, and both strikes can vanish, but Hermes clips on Apollo's terms. Refuse, and one more strike can end every channel on the account.

Here is what Hermes doesn't know: at 9:12 that morning, someone had already written down 2:14. One last thing: in the ranking, the god just above Hermes gained followers today too. Still exactly one ahead.

The evidence · The story is fiction. These rules are real.
  1. Twelve hours is the ceiling

YouTube says the maximum file size you can upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less, and that only verified accounts can upload videos longer than 15 minutes.

  2. Only public watch hours count

To apply to the YouTube Partner Program, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers with 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Only watch hours from long-form videos set to public count: private, unlisted and deleted videos don't. Every channel that meets the threshold then goes through a standard review, typically in about a month.

  3. Copied content isn't paid

YouTube's reused content policy covers content downloaded or copied from another online source without any substantive modifications. It applies to the channel as a whole, and monetization may be removed from the entire channel.

  4. Two strikes, one left

Three copyright strikes make an account, along with any associated channels, subject to termination. A strike can be resolved if the person who filed the removal request retracts it.
